Indications that a product/service will be a big hit for a long time (in order, from best indicator to very weak indicator):
1. A *lot* of people love it.
2. It's sustainable/profitable from a revenue model that doesn't threaten people's love for it (eg. annoying ads).
3. It's sustainable/profitable.
4. Some people love it, more & more every day.
...?...
98. It's got impressive investors.
99. It's got impressive partners or business development deals.
100. It will spend a lot of money on marketing.
98, 99, 100 *can* be a part of a winning strategy, but mean nothing alone.
I couldn't agree more with this post, the first post I read. The best business models, I think, are symbiotic relationships -- where the customer, the business, investors are all rewarded for their involvement. Google has this idea down pat: people love it, and the ads are ideally right what the searcher is looking for, and are easily ignored if they are not.
The ideas listed as 98, 99, and 100 may follow naturally from such a symbiotic relationship ...
