Aside from the 'constraints' point, what's your company/project/organization's cocaine?
How about a minimalist Meetup? I'd love to see a sleeker model ... so would the first-time user who posted the "this interface is SO confusing" message on your message boards.
My prediction is one day in the not-too-distant future, a viable competitor to Meetup will appear, and it will not be a victim of the feature-creep that has plagued your site ...
