a case FOR fb/twitter: "these networks are not about maintaining contact with your close friends, no matter WHAT fb calls your contacts: it's about maintaining contact with your community. Like the people in your neighborhood that you know well only enough to trick-or-treat and sell girlscout cookies to, these are people you send a low-grade signal out to, to maintain community" - Commenter DoyceT
great point -- easy to fall into trap of disrespecting these things if you think it's about "friends"
someone needs to spell out the various emerging definitions of community, eg:
- your geo-dispersed acquaintances from across your lifespan (fb, twitter: "the community me" (~"the daily me"))
- a geo-dispersed network around a topic (ning)
- your local network/organization around a topic (meetup group)
- your neighborhood
