CHARLIE: The book is titled “Showing Up for Life.” Where does the title come from? WILLIAM GATES SR.: It comes from Woody Allen. WILLIAM GATES SR.: His remark was, showing is up 80 percent of life, I think, something like that, and I agree with that. CHARLIE ROSE: How do you agree with it? What is it -- how does it manifest itself in your life? WILLIAM GATES SR.: Well, I think showing up is the strongest indication of seriousness about what you’re doing, and you know, activities -- civic activities are basically group affairs, and if you’re involved with a group and people stop showing up, then the cause is diminished. And if the group continues to show up and talk with energy about the problem, then you’re going do go somewhere. So showing up is vital to moving.
